A new generation for Kirkcaldy's Lad & Lass

THE NEW Lang Toun Lad and Lass have been chosen.
Following a hotly-contested competition run by the Beveridge Park Community Festival and the Fife Free Press, we can now announce the winners are Reece Inches and Casey McCallum.

They will play a lead role in this summer's community festival which runs from July 2 - 4.

Casey and Reece will be the first of a new generation of figureheads as the Lang Toun Lad and Lass make a welcome return.

Liz Easton, chairman, told The Press it was a difficult decision to make.

She said: "We had a panel of three, which included two committee members and a youth worker, to select the Lad and Lass.

"We found it very hard to judge – especially the girls – but Reece and Casey knew a lot about the history of the Lad and Lass when they were asked.

"Casey said her granny had previously put herself forward as the Lang Toun Lass. She wasn't chosen but was part of the parade."

All of our finalists will be part of the event with Reece and Casey being supported by Megan Jean Jones, Courtney Lee Davies, Rebecca Reekie, Shaun Ramsay and Shannon Cruickshank.

Added Liz: "We were so pleased with the number of entries. The kids came from right across Kirkcaldy so we had representation from different parts of the town."

The committee is now looking forward to the final preparations with Kirkcaldy store Rejects generously offering to contribute towards the cost of materials to make dresses for the girls.

Tickets for the band nights in the marquee on the Friday and Saturday are also now available. To book telephone 645530.

Councillor Alice Soper said: "It is great to see the Lad and Lass making a return to Kirkcaldy. I would like to thank the Fife Free Press, as well as Liz and the other committee members for organising this.

"I am looking forward to seeing them getting involved in all sorts of civic events over the coming year."

As well as switching on the Christmas lights in Kirkcaldy and opening next year's Links Market, Reece and Casey also receive a specially commissioned glass trophy for the year along with a medal to keep.

They also scoop prizes of: a family meal at the Pancake Place, Asda gift vouchers, McDonald's vouchers and a photographic souvenir of the day
